Since 2019, we have increasingly directed funds in support of indigenous communities in the fight to defend their rights and safeguard their ancestral land and knowledge.

New Partnership with Beaver Trust
This #WorldWildlifeDay we announced our new partnership with Beaver Trust, an exciting addition to Savitri’s growing work on ecosystem restoration. Beavers play a crucial role in the functioning of our ecosystems, serving as a nature-based solution to land, river and wildlife restoration. Although native to Britain, these ecosystem engineers were hunted to extinction 400 years ago. More recently, they have been reintroduced across the UK in an effort to reverse environmental degradation and decreasing wildlife numbers.

Women are at the heart of so many of our projects. From the palliative care nurses that travel hours across rural India to treat patients in their homes; the indigenous women preserving and passing down their traditional knowledge to future generations; the change-makers within NGOs spear-heading innovative solutions to the climate crisis; and the young women in Bihar studying to qualify in optometry and challenging gender stereotypes, the role of women across our projects forms an essential part of their continued success.
Inauguration of Savitri’s new Eye Hospital in Purnea, Bihar
It is with immense joy we announce that on the occasion of World Sight Day 2020, the new ‘Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital – Savitri Waney Charitable Eye Centre’ was inaugurated and opened to patients. Specifically chosen for its location, the new 60-bed hospital has been designed to serve a particularly underprivileged region of Bihar, offering curative and preventive eye care services – both affordable and accessible – to communities most in need.
